car seat question

I bought James a new car seat this morning, but when I took it home and started reading the manual, I realized it was wrong for his age. Do any of you moms out there have a suggestion for my baby who is 21 1/2 pounds (1/2 lb away from the limit on his infant car seat), but not quite 9 months? The one I bought is for 1 year and up. I also bought one that was just crash tested by consumer reports and failed (even though it advertised being the safest one...Graco Safe Seat). If any of you have seen this, it was on the news last night and on the Today Show this morning. Here's the list, in case you were wondering.

The Good
Baby Trend Flex-Loc Adjustable Back
Graco Snugride with EPS

The Bad
Chicco KeyFit
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP
Compass I410
Evenflo Embrace
Britax Companion
Graco SafeSeat
Safety 1st Designer
Combi Centre ST
Evenflo Discovery
Eddie Bauer Comfort

Anyways, please let me know if you are or were in the same situation with your baby, and if you liked or didn't like yours or have any insight. Thanks!!

**Update...I've been doing a lot of searching on the web, and it looks like Evenflo Triumph 5 is a very safe one at a great price. Do any of you have that one? It's rear facing for up to 30 (or 35, can't remember now)pounds and forward facing for up to 40.

I own the same one & am going to try my hardest to get the manufacturer to refund my money. Graco was unhelpful to say the least. I'm going to pressure the retailer to take it back. Good luck with your efforts...

I bought the Evenflo Triumph 5 last year when my son outgrew his infant seat, mainly because it was rated as a Best Buy from Consumer Reports & is very safe...I would recommend it to anyone!

I have a Cosco Scenera in the box waiting for EKG when in the infant seat gets to hard to handle or to small. A friend recomned it because it goes from 5 to 40 pounds.

I'll have to check tomorrow to see which one we have.

Going back to previous posts: James is adorable in his Santa hat! I love the picture of him pulling the string on the present. It looks like ya'll had a great family Christmas:) Your photo shoot was pretty funny too!

Shepherd has a forward facing Eddie Bauer - I just saw that his might be the one on the "bad list" so I need to check in to that...we have been very happy with it though - he's comfortable in it, and it locks in place without budging at all...not to mention the added bonus of looking stylish for the parents. :)

Rauly's is the Graco car-seat that's on the "good list" (I'm pretty sure!). We're very happy with it - it was perfect because she was too long for her infant car-seat but too small in weight and young in age to face forward. This allowed her to sit rear-facing but in a car seat that could eventually become a forward facing seat (which is how she sits now!). It also locks in very tight and she's snug as a bug in a rug when we're driving! :)

Good luck making your decision!

Harry is not even close to the big baby car seat but, I am so upset that we did all that research and Harry's car seat is in the unsafe list too....the Graco Safe Seat. I am calling Target today to see if they will refund or let me exchange.

I believe the category for the seats which can be rear or forwards facing is "convertible seats". I always had big babies who outgrew the weight limit before the age limit. I would face them rear in the convertible seat until they were one and then turn them forward. They were SO HAPPY riding as a big kid. I imagine James will be also.

The whole updated safety report is quite a letdown. I can't believe so many seats are in question. My husband has always been able to get our seats fairly snug by sitting with his knees into the seat while fastening the belt part and then it becomes a tight fit. Grandparents are notorious for having the wrong fit in our family and my DH has to redo their seats often.

Jacob uses the Evenflo Triumph...we have one in each car. We used it facing backward till he was 1, then turned it around and he's still in it at 3. (40 months) I love it because it's supposed to be the safest one out there right now. It's worked really well for us!

Thank you guys SO much! That was a huge help! We're going with the Triumph. We just got back from Dallas, and I was praying we didn't get in a wreck since the one James is in is one of the worst...the Eddie Bauer Comfort Seat. I thought that if it was Eddie Bauer it must be good, but I worked (frustratingly) for hours to get the base to fit tightly into the car when we got it, so I think we're ok for a few more days. Scary to think we've driven all over the south several times since he's been born!

Not sure what we use as far as brand goes, but as far as the rear or front facing, we turned Will around a month or so early. He was the right weight, just not the right age. We figured what would the police do if they pulled us over? Ask for his ID?

Funny you should post about carseats. I got this you tube video in an e-mail today. Warning though~ it is REALLY sad. BUT they recommend a seat at the end.

I may be getting to this post too late -- we have the evenflo one for Sam. I didn't like it at all -- the cover is impossible to get off to wash (we did that a LOT since he was carsick all the time), the straps were a little tangled & twisted often, and the thing that makes the straps tighter and looser broke within a couple of months.

We have Graco seats for both of them still -- and I love them. We have had Seth in a convertible Graco since he was about 6 months (he outgrew the pounds in the infant seat). The one we have for him is this one (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2400913&cp=2255983.2256187.2256196&view=all&parentPage=family). He is still in it and has been his most comfortable seat. It has that memory foam insert in it that seems really comfy too!
