How soon they forget!

I was at the gym the other day (I'm trying to get back in the habit), and I saw one of the mothers of one of my kids from this past year. We were happy to see eachother since we had seen eachother almost every day this past year before or after school. She told me that her son was in the aerobics room doing some kid activities. I walked in to say hi, and he didn't even recognize me!! This was a boy who I had spent 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with for 9 months and who would give me lots of hugs every day. He looked at me squinting his eyes, and I said, "It's Mrs. ...", and he just barely mumbled hi and walked away! That made me sad, but I guess he was just surprised to see me in a place other than school!

That's right, Lauren. My mother is a retired school teacher, and while I lived with her, I thought all other teachers lived under their desks.

That's what I think they think, too! Some will be jumping up and down when they see me outside of school, and some act so shocked! It's kind of funny!

A related funny story...when I was teaching school I saw once of my girls and her mom at Victoria's Secret. The mom later told me that the girl was in shock about seeing me out of school much less at Victoria's Secret. The mom told her, "even teachers have to buy underwear sometimes." That made the girl even more startled than she already was!

My daughter just finished preschool a mere 2 months ago. She said something the other day about "my preschool teacher." I prompted her to say what the teacher's name was. She had forgotten!

Granted, she was only with her 3 hours, 3 times a week, but still! I used to teach school too, and I do think it's a little sad that we can be "forgotten" so easily. Of course, how many names of my students have I forgotten over the years!!??!
