Bad Sleeper/James Stories

I have been a very bad blogger lately, mostly because my almost two-year-old requires 100% of my attention almost all day long, and he has not been going to bed as early and is trying to give up his naps, so the last thing I want to do at night is sit down at the computer and try to think! I snatch 5 minutes here and there on the computer to check a blog or two, and then James will come right over and get me up! This is probably going to continue, too, because I don't see an end in sight!

James has gone from being the best sleeper to a pretty bad sleeper over the past few weeks. Everything is all out of whack with his sleeping patterns. We used to rock him for 5 minutes, read a book, etc, and put him in bed around 7. He'd go right to sleep. It's now taking him about an hour of crying (as I'm writing this, he did a little better tonight!) while we go in and reassure him in ever increasing intervals before he settles down. He's also getting up an hour or two earlier every morning, and not going down for a nap AT ALL. The past couple of days I have driven until he's asleep at naptime (it feels so strange to leave my house at 1:00!), just so he won't be so sleep deprived. The poor thing has circles under his eyes and is throwing one big, HUGE tantrum every day now.

Besides that, though, this is my favorite age so far with James. He seems to get more fun every single day, and is the sweetest, most loving and adorable little buddy I could ever ask for. He is hilarious and his little personality just melts me. I am crazy about this age, and he's just so enjoyable to us. He is learning new things all of the time and seems to shock us almost every day! A few weeks ago, I thought I'd try to get him to learn some of his numbers. I had never worked on them before, so I thought it would be fun. I started with 1, and he said "Two". With me alternating numbers, he counted up to 9 (skipping 8)! We did it over and over, and he did it perfectly every time. I couldn't believe my ears! I guess he picked that up in a book or on Sesame Street!

James is also getting really into praying. This one makes us so proud. James will wait till we all three are sitting down at the table and will say, "Pray?" He will reach for our hands, bow his head, and then say, "AMEN!" A couple of times now, he has gone over to the table at random times, bowed his head, and started saying a jibberish prayer. I'm sure that makes God so happy!

One funny quirk about James is that he usually knows exactly where we are around town. He is very spatially aware, and will talk about the places we go when we are near them, no matter which direction I've come from. Even places that we've only been a couple of times.

James made me laugh today when I put an outfit on him that he hadn't worn since the Fall. He used to wear this outfit with his cowboy boots that are too small for him now and hasn't worn in months. When I put the outfit on, he ran away from me, went into his closet, and came back with the cowboy boots on! Either he has a great memory or a great fashion sense! I'm hoping it's the first one!

James' favorite books right now are Maisy books. If you have a small child and don't have them, go get one, because they seem to have a spell over them. James says "Night-night, Maisy" before bed, and during the day, we have to hunt for the books sometimes, because he's so insistent on reading them.

One of James' favorite games to play is hide and seek. He runs fast and will hide really well and wait. When I find him, he does his growly laugh. He is also very into soccer right now, and I would say it's what he does best. He loves to dribble down the street and pass it back and forth to us.

I have no pictures right now, but I will work on that soon! Hope everyone is doing well!

We've missed you!!! I do understand about the attention- infact, Creighton will not let me on the computer while he's awake. He gets really upset and insists on banging on the keyboard or tries so hard to pull me away. Not worth it!

I'll pray for James (and you!) and the quick return of his "normal" sleeping habits.

Let's play sometime!

Thank you Lauren! Did Josh tell you that I visit your blog looking for updates frequently? I'm sorry he's not sleeping his NORMAL 12 HOURS (which is crazy - none of mine ever did), but I'm sure he'll get back in his routine in time. You and Josh are such wonderful parents! Can't wait to see you in April!

Love,
Aunt Ally

Oh I SOOOO understand! Is it in the air? For several nights in a row Ella Kate just would not go to sleep and would yell. Not cry, but YELL at the top of her lungs. After a while I had to go get her so the other two kids and Rob could sleep. She seems to have developed a fear of her bed. It's CRAZY! She has always loved her bed! I rocked and rocked her trying to get her to sleep. Hours later, she was wide awake and I was falling asleep. Out of desperation I had to go lay down in my bed with her. For the first time in her life, EK slept with us...but it was not very comfy. Since then she refuses to stay in her bed. She has been sleeping in a pack-n-play in our room for four of five days. But we are going to take advantage of the other kids being out on Spring break and get over this fear of sleeping in her own bed thing! At least that is the plan...

Oh Lauren, how I can sympathize with the sleeping problems. Clayton has just gotten back into a regular sleep routine after a couple of months of fighting it. He's always been a super-duper sleeper as well so it must be the age. Hang in there, this too shall pass!

Thank you Kimberly, and I'd love to play sometime soon!

Aunt Ally,
Yes, Josh told me that, and several other people in the fam were getting on to me too! :) We are counting down the days until we come see y'all!

Steph and Tesney,
Thanks for sharing your similar struggles! It always helps to know you're not in this alone! I hope yours get over it and stay over it! Maybe it is just this age!

You need to get James praying in jibberish on video! That would be so cute:) I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with him sleeping. I think every mom has been there. Is he getting his two year molars?? Hang in there I'm sure in no time he will be back to his normal self.

We don't have any Maisy books...I guess I need to get some!

Lauren-Sorry about the sleep issues. I think all kids go through this, not that that helps anything though...
I know you added me to your blog without knowing me (thank you). Anyway, I made my blog private awhile back and don't have your email address to add you. You may not care or want to read, but I feel weird that I can read yours and you can't read mine. Hope all that made sense? So, if you do want me to add you just please email me your address. Thank you! :)

lar,
i can empathize with the sleep thing...sounds liek everyone can. everytime tristan gets teeth it throws us off! then he gets on a roll and i get spoiled and then another tooth...so goes the cycle.

hey, did you see my post a while back about the "Virgania Hornsen's hot air balloon rides"? i thought you would think it was as funny as i did! reminds me of us!

I've accepted the fact that I have permanent brain loss from lack of sleep - I think once you have children you just have to accept that you will never have good sleep again!...it seems like once you get them on a great sleep schedule, before long, they're in a new phase and are sleeping less! A word of encouragement, this too shall pass...Shep did the same thing (although he was a little older when he did it) and we just cut out his nap...he sleeps fine at night again because of it. Glad to hear the Satterfields are all better again!!!

I hope things are going a little better. I know how rough it can be when everyone is sleep deprived! Hang in there, he will work it out. Hopefully soon!

Lauren,

Unfortunately you are in a not so fun sleeping phase, but it will get better! I know what you mean, Cal has started doing that too. He used to almost beg to go to bed around 7:00 and never cry when we layed him down. Now, he has started crying and not wanting to go to bed - ever since daylight savings. I wonder if that had something to do with it. Anyways, we miss ya'll and I just love hearing about his funny personality!

Lauren, I understand the busy-ness. The last thing I've had time for lately is blogging, and Sam's been sleeping (until this week). I got a big kick out of your description of James' prayers. I can remember my brother praying when he was a little older than James - he would close his eyes so tight and move his mouth like he was talking, even though no understandable words were coming out. It is amazing to me the awareness that little ones have of the Almighty. I'm glad you guys are doing well!
