Help!

We've been struggling with the naming of Jack! I know that Jack has always been a nickname for John, but I don't know if I want to name him John and him have to correct his teachers and write down John (Jack) Michael Satterfield on formal papers.

We decided on Jack Michael, thinking that Jack as a nickname is more for older people, and that you can name a boy Jack now. I don't want him to wish he had a more formal, traditional name down the road, though. What are your thoughts on this??

I think we'd be fine either way, and I love both ways, but I'd love your help! I put a poll out to the side, or you can leave a comment. Thanks for your help with this!

I love both....but am partial to naming him what you are going to call him. Working in the pediatric therapy world, I've seen that it gets confusing when they have one name...but are called another.

My brother Blake is actually Randall Blake, and it drove him CRAZY growing up that he constantly had to correct people! I like both names, but Jack might be easier on him in the long run.

My vote is to name him JACK, since that is what you are going to call him. It is a PRECIOUS name!!

Lauren - I guess since I'm the only vote for John Michael, I should identify myself. I went with my gut at the last second and was surprised to see I was the only one. I like the Biblical correlation of James and John. I also like the idea of everyone else calling him John Michael while his family and closest friends call him Jack. But then again, I like Jack Michael, too.

coming from someone who has a "formal" name--please name him JACK! it was always the worst to have to stop everyone from calling me my real name and go by my nickname. he will thank you for it and have a lot less s'plaining to do!

I'd go with Jack as well- it would be difficult to constantly be correcting people your entire life. Cute name! :)

i vote for jack, too.

i know jack is a nickname of john, but jack is also acceptable as a name. i have several friends that have named their boys jack and not used john as the "real" name.

I didn't even know Jack was a nickname for John! I think you should name him Jack and call him Jack. Honestly Jack Michael sounds pretty formal to me. I can't imagine any boy i know boy or even man for that matter thinking "I wish my parents had given me a more formal name than Jack." Can you?

I like Jack the best. If that is what YOU like, then that is what people will call him.

Lauren,
I am a firm believer in naming your child what you plan to call your child (please forgive us that we shortened Jessica and Jennifer to "Jess" and "Jenn")! Also I think it's important to have as the first name, what you plan to call your child. I speak from experience being named Gloria Allyson and being called "Allyson" by friends and family, but anyone who didn't know me (first days of school, work, etc...) called me Gloria.

Anyway, whatever you decide, you know we will love!

Aunt Ally

p.s. - what did you decide about the tux for James? Call me so we can talk. Love ya!

Stick with Jack!!! Maybe I'm the exception, but I've never heard of anyone named John being called Jack...so in my mind, naming him Jack and actually calling him Jack would be perfectly natural.

Stay with Jack. I think it a perfect combination of tradition and modern.

You've probably already decided, but I vote "Jack" as well! As for wanting something more formal when he grows up...speaking personally, I've sort of broken away from my more formal name (Jessica) and now prefer to be called just "Jess." (I (This is Jess, though I am signed in under Jennifer's name!) :-)

I like Jack! I think that name is so cute. Me and Lindsey are together...I've never heard of Jack being a nickname for John. And my husband's name is John, still never heard of that. But, the reason I say stick with Jack is pretty much the same as everyone else. I'm a firm believer in naming a kid what you will call them and making it their first name. It's my reason for naming Max, Max, and not Maxwell and Kate, Kate, not Kathryn. And also not making Kate her middle name, which would have been so much easier in the whole naming process. Anyway, whatever you choose will be perfect and great. Both are great names!
