Tomorrow is my baby's 28th birthday! Since we're having company come in tonight, I'm blogging about it today. Last night, we had the family over for cake after church. We will do more celebrating tomorrow with our friends from college! Last year, Josh was writhing in pain from his back injuries, so it's nice for him to be able to enjoy be spoiled and celebrated on his birthday this year! 28 is starting to sound old, but we always feel kind of young because a lot of our friends are a year or two (or more) older than us, and we're both the babies in our families, youngest of three.
This has not been the best week for little Jamesy, though. Two nights ago, we were on a walk with James in his wagon. About halfway through our walk, I handed the handle over to Josh for him to pull. James lost his balance and busted his lip and tounge on the wagon. There was blood (and tears) everywhere!
The reason we went to the doctor was not for his mouth, but for another thing! He has had diarrhea all week and yesterday woke up with a mild fever. I took him in, and his fever was gone, so the doctor just said to feed him bran, bananas, etc. Last night, while my family was on their way over, James threw up...a lot! He has never in his life thrown up this much. We gave him a bath and hoped that was the end of it (and I was thankful my mom was over there so she could help!). Well, he threw up about everything else in his stomach all over me, soaking through my shirt! Now that I've been thrown up on, I feel that I've been fully indoctrinated into the world of parenthood! It didn't stop there. He threw up every 15-30 minutes until about midnight. About 10:00, we got some good advice from the on call doctor and one of our friends who's a doctor, to help prevent dehydration. I thought I'd list them in case someone ever needs it, or if I need it again!
They said to give him a teaspoon at a time of liquid (preferably pedialite, but a lot of kids hate it, so you can do Gatorade, very watered down juice, or water)...no milk! Give it every 15 minutes or so, and if he keeps it down 3 times, up it a teaspoon, until you get him to drink an ounce. James didn't want any of that near his mouth, so our friend said to give him benadryl. That did the trick for him! I gave him that about midnight, so it coated his stomach, stopping the throwing up, and knocked him out! He also said to hold him upright, and that would help stop the process. I did that until about 12:30, but James wanted to stretch out, so I put him in bed. He woke up at 7:45 without any throw up on him! He has been happy as can be, drinking juice, and even kept down a banana! I'm so thankful to God he's over it (for now and hopefully for good) and that it didn't turn into anything worse. My nurse mama said to watch for signs of dehydration, which is sunken in eyes, dry lips, skin not going right back down when you pinch it, but he wasn't anywhere close. Also, early on we were calling friends to see if anyone had fenergin, but thankfully no one did, because both docs said that they don't like to give it to anyone under 2, since their brains aren't fully fortified until age 2. Wanted to throw that in there, hopefully to help someone going through the same thing!

Happy Birthday to Josh!
My oldest, Madalyn has been going through the same thing all night! She started vomiting around midnight but has stopped since around 10 this morning. I finally got her to keep down some tylenol because she also has 102 temp.
I am glad James is over it, now hopefully Madalyn will get better also without anyone else in the house getting it!
I learned a trick from our doctor that always helps my kid's stomachs to settle when it is in throw-up mode. It is totally safe at any age...even while pregnant. Drink a tablespoon of the juice from a can of "peaches in heavy syrup"(it has to be heavy syrup)every 20 to 30 minutes until your stomach settles. It really works! The doctor explained why, but I forgot that part. My kids ask for "peach juice" seconds after throwing up now. It didn't always help me when pregnant, but would sometimes settle my stomach for an hour or so. Glad James is better!
Happy Birthday Josh! Hope you have a great time with your friends!
JUST IN CASE YOU get sick...Dr. nic nic has reglan (better than phenegren) to help mama out :)
Lindsay,
I wonder if something was going around at MDO?? I hope no one else gets it!
Tracy,
We went to the pool last Monday, Thursday, and Friday (I think...I have the worst memory about stuff like that) but Friday we were at Riverside's pool w/ Elizabeth. The diarrhea started Thursday, and I remember him taking a sip of pool water. I wonder if that's what caused it?!
SG,
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to buy both of those and keep them on hand just in case!
Dr. nic nic,
I'll keep that in mind! Hopefully I'll never need it!
Well, happy birthday to Josh and congrats on being indoctrinated into mommyhood! It's been a busy week for y'all!! I hope James is feeling better soon and none of you catch whatever bug he had!
Happy B-day to Josh! I know there is nothing worse than to have your baby be sick. It's torturing knowing they are hurting. Will got salmonella when he was 3 months old and that was by far the worse experience we have ever had. They had to put in an IV to get him hydrated but couldn't find a vein. 4 different nurses stuck him at least a half a dozen times and all the while he was screaming. Glad little James is better now.
You poor thing! Poor James too! Yes, you can officialy wear your badge of motherhood proudly! It's amazing what doesn't gross you out anymore when it's your own child. I'm glad he's feeling better. I'll pray that you and Josh don't get it either. Take care! Shauri
happy birthday josh!! and i'm so glad everything is okay with jamsey! i know NOTHING about pediatrics and will probably FREAK when my babies are sick. thanks for posting the good advice! miss you! love seeing your pics!
James is getting cuter and cuter! Hope he is feeling better!
Poor James! Hope he is all better now!
Happy Birthday, Josh!!!
Glad he is better! I can't stand the pukies. Gosh, that child is just gorgeous. That black and white of him at 15 mo. is pure baby Gap or babystyle!
Hey Lauren - I posted a comment on here forever ago and for some reason, I just noticed it didn't go up on your comment page. I do hope James is all better now, and Shauri is right - after being thrown up on, you are now officially crowned in to motherhood!! Hope Josh had a good b-day!
I am so glad that there are moms out there who are honest and open about all the ups and the downs!! It will be great to rely on all of you one day. All those pics are adorable...what a photogenic baby!!
Happy Birthday to Josh!! Your poor little guy, and what a big task for you! I love the pic of you holding and comforting him! I'm glad everyone is doing better now!
Poor little guy! I hope he is feeling much better soon! Thanks for sharing the advice for how to help a baby when they're that sick. I didn't know any of that stuff, so it will definitely be useful if Will ever gets that type of bug.
On a different, and happier note, Happy (belated) birthday Josh. Hope it is the start to a great year!
